  • SALVE 24"x30" graphite on paper, 2024
This drawing captures a poignant moment of vulnerability and seeking comfort. This image shows the artist's young child in a bathtub assuming the fetal position, during a bout of illness. The warm water serves as his source of solcace, mirroring the nurturing environment of the mother's womb. The juxtaposition between his distress and the sanctuary of the bath highlights the resilience and fragility of childhood. The presence of the drain symbolizes both the cyclical nature of life and the metaphorical rebirth inherent in moments of healing and recovery.
  • GENTLE WEIGHT OF YEARS 14"x14" graphite on paper, 2024
Sometimes when I see a photograph, I'm instantly drawn in to the image staring back at me. The image could be one of a family member, my own child, a friend, a lover, even a stranger. When this particular picture was shared with me-done so in a string of comical back and forth texts-I was struck with this inexplicable sense of recognition. Had I met this soul once before in a sea of infinite timelines? Perhaps. Regardless, I felt an irresistable desire to draw this boy. Spend some time with this boy. To study the lines and form of this pure and unguarded face that has decades of life and lessons and love and heartache and joy ahead of him. And sometimes my work is just that...a celebration of the building blocks, the good and the bad, that make us who we are now.
  • NOTHING TO SEE HERE 14"x14" graphite on paper, 2024
This drawing shows a bit of whimsy in the child's predicament ...his smirk suggesting a mix of mischief, resilience, or even defiance. His expression could indicate an awareness of his predicament but a refusal to take it too seriously.•The plastic hanger symbolizing an external constraint or an unexpected entanglements such as societal pressures or playful childhood mistakes, getting caught in dumb decisions and having to find our ways out...all part of the journey to adulthood.
  • SNAP 24"x30" graphite on paper, 2024
The spot lit surface of the forest floor in this image is seen amid a blank space that suggests a moment of clarity and revelation occurring in the midst of emptiness and obscurity. The stick’s bending position shows tension; it implies that the boy’s acts are courageous and defiant to push his boundaries to the brink of breaking- representing our ability to create our own future even when it seems impossible and risky.
  • MASK 9"x12" graphite on paper, 2024
This drawing tenderly portrays the artist’s child adorned in a handmade costume. Despite the playful design, the boy’s shadowed expression notes a sense of reticence and introspection. The costume serves as both a shield and a veil, symbolizing the child's inclination to conceal their true self when navigating the world. Through this imagery, themes of identity and vulnerability are explored as well as the child's desire for protection and anonymity amidst the complexities of life.
  • CROSSFIRE 9"x12" graphite on paper, 2024
This drawing suggests the child has been put in the middle of a mud fight, or metaphorically speaking, caught in the crossfire of another party’s “mud slinging”. Through her disheveled appearance and downcast gaze, the artwork evokes a sense of sorrow and resignation, highlighting the emotional toll of facing the hardship of being an innocent bystander amongst the normally safe people in her life. Amidst the muck, there's a subtle resilience in her demeanor, hinting at the possibility of overcoming adversity and emerging stronger from the experience.
  • BLOOM 9"x12" graphite on paper, 2024
This drawing of a young girl emerging from the water gives off a sense of empowerment and transition. With a confident stance and determined expression, she embodies strength and resilience, symbolizing her readiness to embrace the future journey into young womanhood. The water surrounding her suggests a metaphorical rebirth marking this moment of growth and self-discovery.
  • FABIOLA 17"x14" graphite on paper, 2023
This drawing depicts a young girl with a dish towel draped over her head, its folds framing her face in a manner reminiscent of religious iconography. This drawing shows a deliberate nod to Jean-Jacques Henner's famous painting, "Fabiola", which depicts Saint Fabiola, patron saint of divorce and broken marriages. The humble dish towel, with it's contemporary domestic symbolism, replaces the traditional red veil. This subtle detail suggests the weight of familial fracture and resilience borne by modern households, particularly children who often carry silent burdens. The child's solemn expression, paired with the towel's makeshift halo, evokes both innocence and quiet strength, transforming a mundane household object into a symbol of sacred endurance amidst life's fractures.
  • ON RECORD 24"x30" graphite on paper, 2023
This drawing examines imagination, reflection and fleeting nature of childhood memories. The blank background creates a space for him to be without any limitation, since he is not confined by anything. The boy, standing there with cups on his ears as if they were earmuffs of some kind, brings in a little bit of humor and whimsy that would only make sense to children who are not yet weighed down by “adult” limitations. The tally marks represent time passing or records of what happened before. The marks are being being drawn in the dirt, which is temporary and easily washed off by rain or wind, representing the fleeting nature of life’s moments.
  • PASSAGE 24"x30" graphite on paper, 2023
This drawing captures a pivotal moment of a transition, as a child, stands with her back to us, tightly, clutching her beloved stuffed bunny. The dark passage before her represents the unknown journey into adulthood. This imagery symbolizes the inevitable departure from innocence, confronting the unknown trials and tribulations that lie ahead for warmth of childhood is exchanged for the uncertainty of the future.
  • GROUND CONTROL 24"x30" graphite on paper, 2023
This drawing centers around the artist's son, holding onto the end of a climbing rope. This tether both grounds him and connects him to something unknown beyond the image plane. The rope disappearing from view implies that the child's path is uncertain, one he must navigate on his own, while the viewer is left to wonder what lies at the other end. .
  • CUT THE KIDS IN HALF 24"x30" graphite on paper, 2023
In this image, the artist’s daughter is placed in the corner of the composition which allows the emptiness behind her to almost swallow her. The girl’s tear-filled eyes reflect the pain that lies within her little body. The figure is made small but her emotional presence is big. This specific moment captured the first morning in her mother’s new apartment, away from her family home, the beginning of a new chapter in her life where her protected life up until then meets the harsh reality of change. In this raw and tender portrayal, the artist invites the viewer to observe the beauty of resilience in the face of hardship. Though not every child is the product of a broken home, the artist looks to find common ground as no human goes through life without struggle. There are dark moments, and within that contrast there exists the possibility of healing and growth.
  • HIGGLEDY-PIGGLEDY 24"x30" graphite on paper, 2023
This drawing captures a disorienting scene of a girl who appears to be standing on her head- though the image is deliberately inverted. Her arms are pressed against an unseen surface above her, which now resembles an impenetrable ceiling. The tension in her body and the determined strain on her face project a sense of struggle, as though she is trying to break free from the chaotic forces that have upended her world. This topsy turvy scene transforms her otherwise playful act into a metaphor for resilience in the face of disorder, where gravity is reversed, and demands a defiant push against the weight of life's obstacles.
